Inspirational Message:
Isaiah 35:1-4
1 Even the wilderness will rejoice in those days. The desert will
blossom with flowers. 2 Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers
and singing and joy! The deserts will become as green as the mountains
of Lebanon, as lovely as Mount Carmel's pastures and the plain of
Sharon. There the LORD will display his glory, the splendor of our
God. 3 With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands, and
encourage those who have weak knees. 4 Say to those who are afraid,
"Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy
your enemies. He is coming to save you." Amen

Tips
| "Winter
Annual Flower Beds for Spectacular Holiday Color" |
|
Winter
Gardening can be an awesome display of God's abundant flower
creations. A dazzling array of color can make a major impact
to any home garden, or commercial property, and provide Holiday
pleasure for many months. Success in Winter Annual flower
beds starts with proper plant selection, and installation,
for the region of the Country you may live in. Check with
your local garden center, and university extension office
for recommendations where you live. If you live in areas with
light to moderate snowfall, or freezing temperatures, you
are good to go with Pansies, Dusty Miller, Ornamental Kale
and Lettuce. These plants will provide an array of color and
stand up to many a cold night, and reasonable snowfall. If
you are in an area of heavy snowfall you can consider container
flowers to enjoy in the home, or greenhouse, and still experience
winter color enjoyment.
When
installing your outdoor annual flower beds, be sure to use
a quality garden soil to prepare the bedding areas. Mound
to approximately 6"-8" raised above your existing
soil level for proper drainage, gently tap in place to firm
up mounding. For "best results" do not place flowers
in existing soil. Once you have sculpted a design bordering
the front and sides of your existing landscape beds, you can
begin to lay out plants for balance and impact. I would suggest
installing separate flower plants for a bordering effect such
as: In the center of your color beds place your primary plants
in a dense clustering pattern. Example: Pansies, maybe purple
and yellow! Then on each end of the bed frame with an end
cap of Ornamental Kale or Lettuce! This framing effect will
have the "signature" of a professional design install,
and once the plants grow and fill in you will be delighted!
When installing your annual plants you may use Osmocote or
Dynamite "slow release" 90 day fertilizer placed
right in the bottom of the hole before planting, about ½
to 1- tsp per plant and follow label directions carefully.
By installing your fertilizer in the beginning you won't have
to consider any additional fertilization throughout the winter
months. The above products and the recommended rate should
feed a minimum of 3-4 months.
Once
you have completed your annual flower bed installation take
care "NOT" to mulch these beds to prevent root rot,
crown rot, or other soil borne disease issues related to poor
drainage, or excessive moisture retention. Watering of your
annual flower bed's should be on an "as needed"
basis to keep moist, but drain thoroughly between watering.
You may use a "light" application of pine straw
if you wish to finish off the beds. If you are concerned about
weeds you may apply a pre-emergent granular weed control from
Scott's, readily available in most reputable garden centers.
The pre-emergent measure will insure weeds will be minimal
if not completely eliminated, and will last about 3-4 mos.
for residual control of weed populations. Insects and disease
are normally at a minimum in the winter garden. However, you
may need to watch for insects and disease the same as you
would during the remainder of the year. Treat only as needed
if required.
Recycling
"gift plants" such as Poinsettia, and Christmas
cactus is easy, and can be planted in the garden for the next
year's enjoyment. Poinsettia does very well planted in the
garden in a semi-shady environment which receives bright light,
but not direct sun. During spring and summer Poinsettia will
turn green and lose its red leaves. However, once the temperature
cools down near freezing the following season, the bright
red leaves will be back, and make a spectacular display in
your garden to enjoy. Water and fertilize during your routine
spring summer maintenance of the garden. Christmas cactus
can be kept inside "perhaps" on a window sill or
patio area, watered and fertilized the same as your other
indoor plants but, "not too wet" and no direct sunlight.
Bright indirect light is good.
The spectacular
array of color provided will go well with all your other seasonal
holiday decorations, and the both will greatly compliment
each other to provide an awesome season of color and enjoyment.
Have a Supernaturally blessed Christmas and New Year! And
May God's "Choicest" of Blessings be Your's this
Christmas Celebration Season.

For most of
us today's tests and trials can be somewhat overwhelming. There
never seems to be enough hours in the day for all that lie before
us. With long commutes to and from work, traffic gridlock to hasten
our day, then cheerfully we seek to embrace the evening with our
family and friends. I would like to encourage you to perhaps begin
a small project in the garden. Nothing major, just find something
which may inspire you like a water feature, bird house, or butterfly
garden. I can assure you whatever you take with you into the garden
in the form of stress, or concern, will quickly fade from your primary
interest. I believe The Lord created us to be needed, and active
in being involved in creating things. When you spend time in the
outdoors the "Spirit of God" shall embrace you at every
turn. Your attention will be focused on that which only The Lord
could provide. When you examine the sky, happen upon wildlife, or
watch your flowers blossom with a sunburst of color, God shows up
in a big way. We tend to live our lives with the limited view of
the world based on our scope of daily influence. Day to day work,
shopping, and routines limit our view of the "big picture"
God considers. I once met a friend on location while I was filming
in Orlando Florida, and he shared with me his bitterness and resentment
experienced during a divorce proceeding he was involved in and how
"weeds" helped him get through the ordeal. Whenever the
divorce was getting too much to bear he would simply come home from
work and begin pulling weeds. He then began to notice after a week
or so, his attention was focused on getting the garden weed free,
as opposed to being focused on the divorce at hand. He also shared
with me a "God encounter" he had in the garden, as The
Lord removed all bitterness and resentment toward his ex-wife, and
began a path to healing and restoration for my friend. In my travels
across our great nation I hear of countless stories of how The Lord
has met with many as they were simply working and enjoying their
garden projects. We see in the Bible in the book of Genesis, God
began much in the garden, and today He is patiently awaiting your
arrival. For me and my 20 year career in horticulture, and 5th year
in television, God has always shown up in a "Big Way"
for me with countless lessons of growth, faith, love, and inspiration.
No matter what was facing me each day, He was there with me, and
when my day was at a close, I couldn't wait to get home and work
things out in the garden. And that's after working with my landscape
crews for 10-12 hrs that day.
So what does
a garden hold in store for you? Perhaps a chance meeting with God
to answer some of your concerns? Then again maybe the beginning
of a new found relationship with the one who created and designed
you. Whatever issues or trials you may be experiencing these days,
I challenge you to move your focus from the problem to the solution,
beginning with a humble beginning. I suggest you could start small,
something easy, how about adding a birdhouse? Just imagine what
beauty lies in store when you gaze upon God's creatures visiting
the house you provided. Before you know it you'll be hooked, and
then comes the garden, water feature, Koi Pond, and your on your
way to an oasis built as an alter to Him, a place where you and
God can meet whenever the need arises. Perhaps adding a sitting
bench in the garden will be the next step to allow more time with
God. Well there you go, you're on your way to heaven here on earth.
I sincerely hope this simple article will inspire you to a closer
walk with God, a sweet introduction, or chance encounter. I assure
you everything is possible with God. Whatever your circumstances
today dare to meet with Him regularly, and he will inspire you to
greatness "In Him", and you will always find God "In
The Garden".
Sincerest Regards,
In His Grace
