Inspirational Message:
The
name Christmas is the day of the Christ's birth, which is why Christians
call it Christmas ...
Matthew
2:1-8
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the
time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem. 2
and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the
Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."...
2:11
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary,
and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures
and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
Amen

Gardening Tips
| "House
Plants and Christmas Trees Tips" |
|
- Don't
keep houseplants warmer at night than during the day.
-
Prune fruit trees and bushes.
- Try to avoid a cold, draughty window sill behind closed
curtains at night.
- Gently tap the snow from evergreen shrubs to prevent the
branches from breaking.
- Before bringing your Christmas tree into your home, gently
shake it to make sure it is free of cats, squirrels or any
other animal that may have found a safe haven in it on the
tree lot. Also, check to make sure no insects are in your
tree before you purchase it.
- Keep your Christmas tree well watered from the time it is
brought home until it is discarded.
- Place Christmas trees away from fireplaces, radiators, heat
vents and anything else that could dry the needles.
- Never use open flames on your Christmas tree - the fire
hazard is too high.
- Keep metal foil garlands or tinsel out of your Christmas
light bulb sockets.
- Do not fertilize your live Christmas tree (these are trees
that you plant into your yard after Christmas).
- Do not put spray artificial snow on your live Christmas
tree - Remember, it needs to breathe. (again, this is for
live trees with a root ball).
- During winter, your garden can become a local sanctuary
for wildlife. Birds and foxes may come looking for food scraps.
Evergreen shrubs and trees provide important cover.
- Put out any birdhouses you might have as added refuge for
birds trying to keep warm.
- If
you bought a live Christmas tree, it can be moved outside
and be redecorated for the birds. Anchor the tree in a bucket
full of damp sand. Put on strings of popcorn and cranberries.
You can put apples, oranges, leftover breads and pine cones
covered with peanut butter and dip or roll in birdseed. Place
the edible ornaments well into the tree. Watch the birds love
you for these treats!
- Speaking of live Christmas trees - if you do get one, dig
the hole now in your yard, while the ground may still be warm.
That way, it will be easier to plant your live tree after
the holidays. Make sure to cover that hole with plastic and
a piece of plywood until the tree is planted, so that no one
accidentally steps into it. The hole should be twice the size
as the root ball.

Plants
to Use with Caution Indoors:
- Poinsettias
have low toxicidity, but should be used with caution around
your pets.
- Mistletoe (American type Mistletoe) is toxic to most pets
and humans. The ASPCA has further information on winter plants
that you might be concerned with and lists any side effects
that your pet may have, should they or your child ingest these
plants.
- To see this list of toxic plants, please visit their site
at ASPCA
- Toxic Plants.

Winter Tip: During the coldest winter months, disconnect
water hoses and sprinklers from faucets: some watering devices
could burst in freezing weather.

Pot Tip: Store clay pots in a shed or out of the winter's
cold air, as they may crack in the coldest months.
Covering
Plants: If you cover your plants during the cold winter
nights, make sure to uncover them in the day. Covering plants
with plastic or bubble wrap will allow them to still breathe
at night. But take that plastic off so the sun does not
bake them during the day. Listen for the weather report
in your area and when the weatherman calls for frost, you
know to cover those prized plants that might not be able
to handle the cold.
