Here
are some tips to prepare your lawn and garden this month:
Fall (late September through late November) –
Plant hardy, spring-flowering bulbs: tulips, narcissus (includes all types of daffodils), crocus, eranthis (winter aconites), erythronium, fritillaria, hyacinths snowdrops,
scilla, hardy
cyclamen, lilies.
In California and milder areas of the Southwest, also plant ranunculus, freesias, anemones and paperwhites outdoors. Store tulips, crocus and hyacinths in refrigerator for 6-8 weeks before
planting. In all regions, store potted bulbs in refrigerator
for forcing indoors.
- November is a great month for planting Azaleas, Rhododendron, Camellia and other hardy broad leafed evergreens.
- Prune any diseased roses now, before the heart of winter comes.
- Bring your remaining flowers indoors to enjoy, before the cold air gets to them.
- Order seed catalogs now for January gardening. Check out one of our affiliate partners, Park Seed for your favorites and other plants and flowers you may have never tried to plant.
- Fall
is a good time for improving your garden soil. Add manure,
compost and leaves to increase the organic matter content. Check
out Perm-A-Mulch
- Ornamental grasses provide wonderful interest at this time of year.
- At this time of the year, most ornamentals have become dormant and can be safely replanted. In order to transplant, dig a large root ball. Make sure to get the plant into its new location as soon as possible.
