Here
are some tips to prepare your lawn and garden this month:
- If
you want fresh vegetables throughout the fall, July is the
time to plant fall crops including root crops.
- Plants
and trees that provide color this month include crape myrtles,
spireas, hydrangeas, summersweet, hypericum, butterfly bush
and goldenraintree.
- Lotus
are great plants for container water gardens on a deck or
patio. Barrels make a perfect container for these types
of water gardens.
- Raise
the cutting height of the mower. Taller grass cools the
roots and helps to keep the moisture in the soil longer.
- Change
the water in your bird bath regularly, and keep it filled.
Standing water may become a breeding ground for mosquito
larvae.
- Start
seeds for fall vegetables this month. This includes broccoli,
cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and many others.
- Slugs
and snails hide from the heat of the day, but come out in
morning, evening hours or after rain. Seek and destroy ALL
slugs and their eggs!
- Remember
to change direction when moving your lawn. Travel north
to south on one mowing and east to west on the next cutting.
- Defend
against weeds by promoting a dense, healthy lawn. Grass
that is thick and uniform makes it difficult for weeds to
take hold and grow.
- Don't
prune azaleas and rhododendrons after the second week of
July for they soon will begin setting their buds for next
year's blooms.
- Attract
butterflies by placing fresh sweet fruit pieces on a plate
and then put on top of a post. Placing high will keep other
critters and ants away.
- Change
mowing directions or patterns with each mowing to avoid
grass blades leaning in one direction, as it results in
a rough uneven appearance.
- Now
that the frost is gone, early summer is a perfect time to
sow hardy annuals, such as lupines, biennials, and forget-me-nots.
- Creeping
shrubs, like junipers, can serve as evergreen ground covers.
Use a medley of shrub shapes for design interest and uniformity.
