Gardening
in February

- February Gardening Tips |
With
winter half over, February is a good month to make sure you
are ready for Spring gardens.
Here
are some tips to prepare your lawn and garden this month:
- Trim
back any branches from trees and shrubs that were damaged
by the harsh winter.
- Plants
which may have been pushed out of the ground by frost or high
winds, should be pressed firmly back into place.
- Plant
daylilies, bleeding hearts, and plantain lilies this month.
- If
you plan to grow lobelia, ageratum, verbena, petunia, vinca,
or other slowing plants from scratch, the seeds should be
started indoors in the later part of the month.
- Plant
and transplant perennials this month.
- Strawberries
can be planted as soon as they become available.
- Prune
fruit trees this month.
- Rhubarb,
horseradish, asparagus and artichokes can be planted this
month.
- Kiwis
and grapes must be pruned by Valentines Day to prevent sap
'bleeding'.
- Continue
feeding the birds, as you'll want them around to help in insect
control when the weather warms up.
- Make
sure your mower and garden tools are in shape, sharpened and
ready for the season.
- If
you started a compost pile, make sure to turn it this month.
- Brush
or lightly shake any snow from tree branches and bushes.

Covering
Plants: If you cover your plants during the cold winter nights,
make sure to uncover them in the day. Covering plants with plastic
or bubble wrap will allow them to still breathe at night. But take
that plastic off so the sun does not bake them during the day. Listen
for the weather report in your area and when the weatherman calls
for frost, you know to cover those prized plants that might not
be able to handle the cold.
